Section four: Whitelists and Blacklists

Whitelists and Blacklists exist to make decisions on a per-sender address basis. If an email address is placed in the Whitelist, messages received from that email address will not be subjected to the Spam filter or many of the restrictions that occur during the SMTP transaction.  On the other hand, if a message from an email address which appears in the Blacklist is sent to our servers, it will be rejected.

Adjusting these settings can be done either from the “Spam” or "Filters" links within the “Mail” category on the left navigation menu.  After selecting either “Spam” or "Filters", there will be buttons labeled "Whitelist" and "Blacklist" in the top navigation menu.

Whitelist and Blacklist entries must be of the form 'user@domain.tld' for an exact email address match or '@domain.tld' for a domain-wide wildcard.  Exact entries take precedence over wildcard entries.  For example if a user whitelists '@example.org' and blacklists 'user1@example.org' the following scenarios are possible:

  • An email sent from 'user1@example.org' will be blocked
  • Email from any other address in the domain 'example.org' will get through
Conversely if a user whitelists 'user1@example.org' and blacklists '@example.org', the following scenarios are possible:

  • An email sent from 'user1@example.org' will get through
  • Email from any other address in the domain 'example.org' will be blocked

IMPORTANT: We do not recommend making decisions such as this based on the sender email address. This information is too easily forged. Such settings are trivial to bypass.
